JUNE 08 - VITESSE AT LE MANS
There is no other place for a car enthusiast to be in mid June than the famous La Sarthe circuit of Le Mans for the 76th running of the Le Mans 24 Hour race. Once again, Vitesse were on hand to make sure that members were able to make the most of their visit to the legendary race.
The weekend began on Thursday with less than inspiring weather, however a drive down through the beautiful French countryside in some equally beautiful supercars made up for the lack of sunshine.
The driver’s parade on Friday evening allowed the enormous crowd (this year a record-breaking 258,000 people attended the race) to get close to the drivers. Luckily for Vitesse members, they were able to get much closer throughout the weekend with access to the pits and paddock.
For Le Mans regulars, the site of Group C cars charging once again under the famous Dunlop Bridge was a truly inspiring experience during the support race on Saturday morning. But that was just the warm-up act. The 76th running of the great race turned out to be an absolute classic with a constant battle between the Peugeots and the Audis continuing the final minutes of the 24 hour race. Audi came out on top with non other than Tom Kristensen (again!), Alan McNish and Dindo Capello.
Vitesse members were suitably placed to get covered in champagne by the winning drivers and join in fully with the podium celebrations.
A two day run back up through France via the picturesque port of Hornfleur capped off a fantastic weekend.
Vitesse will be producing a specially commissioned hard-back book reflecting the glamour and energy of this classic endurance event and any members wishing to have a copy should contact Karl for details.
